Get Involved:
Volunteer and Make A Difference

Do you want to make a difference in a real and tangible way? Put your gifts to work in service of the families at BHA!

There are a variety of ways you can volunteer. Peruse the list below, and then use our Volunteer Interest Form to submit your interest, or directly get in touch with the contact person listed for your area of interest.

Volunteer Opportunities at BHA

Bagwashi Circles: The best way to make a personal connection to the families at BHA is to become a Bagwashi Relationship Mentor or Support Volunteer. Bagwashi (bah-GWAH-shee) is an African word meaning "those who help one another" and is closely related to the word for "family." Our Bagwashi volunteers serve as friends and a support system to single moms transitioning from homelessness to wholeness. To find out more about how you can get involved, visit our Bagwashi Circles page or contact us.

Youth Mentoring: We are increasingly working with young people in our program to give them a range of role models and friends, encourage them in challenges and recognize successes. Mentoring can be a blessing both the child as well as the mentor! Commitments generally revolve around the weekly Monday evening sessions youth have in parallel with their mothers' classes.

Childcare: Every Monday evening from 6:30 – 8:00 our participants have a support group meeting, during which we provide childcare. Can you or your group provide supervision and nurturing care so the women in the program can attend this important session for training, support and camaraderie?
Contact: Crystal Baxter, Program Director, at 717.233.6016 or cbaxter@bha-pa.org

Property Maintenance: We need help maintaining our properties, including painting, cleaning, minor repairs and landscaping. Join us on a work day or help on another weekday. We need help on an ongoing basis and have some volunteers that help on a regular weekly basis.
Contact: Dennis Saylor, Property Manager, at 717.233.6016 or dsaylor@bha-pa.org

Skilled Labor: We often have more complex renovation projects underway, and skilled carpentry or other construction labor can be a great blessing.
Contact: Dennis Saylor, Property Manager, at 717.233.6016 or dsaylor@bha-pa.org

Work Groups: We occasionally host work groups from churches, youth organizations, local colleges or civic groups. Contact us if your group is looking for a service project.
Contact: Chris Fitz, Director of Development, at 717.233.6016 or cfitz@bha-pa.org

Event Planning: Each year we host three special events--a bike tour, a golf tournament, and an annual celebration banquet--to raise awareness about and funds for our work. Would you like to help make one or more of these events a reality by recruiting golfers or bikers, distributing materials, recruiting sponsors or helping at the event?
Contact: Chris Fitz, Director of Development, at 717.233.6016 or cfitz@bha-pa.org

Mailing Projects: Several times a year we send out mailings to our supporters and each mailing project is a large undertaking. Would you like to help, or would your church group of 6-12 people be willing to complete a mailing for us? If you're local, we'll bring everything to your church and work alongside you to complete the mailing. Let us know if this interests you.
