Friday, September 09, 2011 Local Disaster Response: What You Can Do Dear Friend of BHA, This has been a tramautic week in Central PA with historic levels of flooding in Harrisburg, Hershey, Elizabethtown, Mount Joy, Lebanon and elsewhere. Due to our position on "the hill" in Harrisburg, we were spared damage. Our staff dealt with some flooding at home, but nothing threatening to life or physical structure. For all of this we are grateful. But our hearts are heavy for our friends and neighbors, many directly connected to BHA in one way or another and others we don't personally know, that are facing various levels of damage and in some cases loss of loved ones. One thing we know about our supporters: you are amazingly compassionate people. You've connected with BHA because you want to help people in need. Therefore, over the next days (and perhaps weeks) we want to serve as a clearing house for information on how you can help with disaster response. I've spent the day making contacts and here is what we know so far. 1. Financial Gifts:
The United Way of the Capital Region has set up a fund where you can make contributions to local disaster relief efforts. Their board has donated the first $25,000 dollars! and all donations will go 100% to disaster response. If this interests you, click here for more information:

This flyer (PDF, 1.9MB) details the American Red Cross's need of donated items for Flood Clean-Up Kits. Please note only the four items at the bottom are needed to supplement existing stock, so this is a simple project for an individual or church to contribute to. These items are:
- Pine Sol (or other floor cleaner)
- Spray cleaner (Comet, 409, or other brand)
- Gloves (either fabric or heavy duty dishwashing, but not both)
- Scrubbing brush (as shown)
I recommend that you contact your local chapter of the Red Cross prior to collection if possible...just in case the Red Cross office closest to you might have a needs list slightly different than the one listed above.. You'll need to talk to them as well so that you know where to deliver your items once collected.3. Volunteers Needs for Clean-up Efforts:
I've talked to individuals from The United Way of the Capital Region and Brethren Disaster Services and hope to make some more connections. The consensus at this point is: it is too early to know the volunteer needs. Water is receding today and until damage can be surveyed, needs assessed, and infrastructure for gathering and coordinating volunteers put in place we can't give specifics on when and where the local volunteers needs are. Many of you are likely already helping your neighbor (or being helped!). As more information becomes clear, I will forward information on how you can get involved. If you are involved in a local church, civic group or business, please pass this information on. Everyday at BHA we see the results of people reaching out to love their neighbor--the families at BHA facing homelessness. In the wake of this disaster, the needs of our neighbors are apparent in our own backyard. As we gain more information on clean-up efforts in Cumberland, Dauphin, York, Lancaster and Lebanon counties, we'll try to keep you informed. In the mean time, please try to stay safe...and say a prayer for those affected. Grace and peace,
Steve Schwartz
