April 2010 Archive of News and MusingsWednesday, April 21, 2010 Exciting Things Are Happening At BHA, but...

WHAT?
BHA is replacing an old, dilapidated storage facility! OK, it might not SOUND exciting, but both the WHY and the HOW of this project really are.
WHY?
Our old cinderblock garage, used only to store tools, was falling apart. The new, larger structure will include:
- Tool storage and a workshop to support BHA’s property rehab work
- Plumbing! Therefore a bathroom and slop sink for BHA’s property manager and volunteers
- A furniture bank for donated items that will help new BHA families get settled
- For the first time in 20 years at BHA, LAUNDRY FACILITIES. This means our single moms no longer have to find the time or use excessive resources to go to the laundromat!
HOW?
The community is coming together to make this project happen!
- The Hanoverdale Church tore down and hauled away the old building this winter.
- Conewago Church of the Brethren is preparing to lay the footers and foundation this spring.
- Mount Wilson COB Church is leading the way on an URBAN BARN RAISING early this summer!
This is what the Brethren Housing “Association” is all about – congregations, business, funders and concerned individuals pooling their resources and partnering together to serve homeless families!
WANNA HELP?
This important project will cost $39,000 for materials and professional labor, including some emergency sewer repair. This cost is significantly lowered by all the labor donated by the churches involved so far!BHA received a generous $15,000 grant from the Josiah & Bessie Kline Foundation to help fund the project, but we still need to raise $24,000 to make the project a reality. If your church, business, school or civic group wants to partner in this project, here are some ways you can help:
- Make a donation to BHA designated to “BHA Urban Barn Raising”.
- Adopt the “BHA Urban Barn Raising” as a project for a pancake breakfast, bake sale, special offering at your church or other fundraiser to support the project. *
- Help us locate donated or discounted building materials or commercial laundry equipment to further lower the cost of the project.

Thursday, April 15, 2010 Celebrate Motherhood! This Mother's Day...consider celebrating motherhood by supporting single moms! You can make a Memorial Gift in Honor or in Memory of a special woman...here's how:
Honor the special lady or ladies in your life with a unique present this Mother’s Day — a donation to BHA in her honor to bless homeless women and children on their journey of healing.
- Send your donation to BHA, and we’ll send you a tax receipt for your gift whether $25, $250 or $2,500. You can mail it to us at BHA, 219 Hummel Street, Harrisburg, PA 17104, or submit the donation through our website's donation page.
- For Honor gifts: Close to Mother’s Day
we’ll mail a postcard to the woman/women you list (please provide a mailing address for each honoree!), letting them know that a gift has been made by you in their honor (the amount of your gift will not be shared.)
- For Memory gifts: You may also choose to make a loving gift in memory of a special woman who is no longer living. Please include the woman or women's name(s) along with your gift.
- For all honor/memorial gifts received before Mother’s Day (May 9), we’ll list your name and the woman/women you choose to honor/remember in the next issue of the BHA newsletter (again, the amount of your gift will not be listed).
Note: Celebrating motherhood in this fashion does NOT get you off the hook for taking your mom, wife, fiance, daughter, girlfriend or other special female out for dinner. Posted by Steve Schwartz (4/15/2010 1:19:10 PM | link)
