April 2007 Archive of News and MusingsSunday, April 29, 2007 Enjoying The Spring Thaw The Spring Thaw Bike Tour entered its third year this year. On April 21, nine long-distance bikers joined forces to raise sponsorship funds to benefit the women and children in BHA's program in Harrisburg. With loops of 50 miles, 100 kilometer and 100 miles, the event is specifically designed to appeal to distance riders and therefore be smaller in number and easier to coordinate...and yet each individual rider did a bang up job of fundraising. Donations are still coming in, and so far our total raised is above $4,000. It truly was the Spring Thaw Bike Tour this year. As we left the starting point at Palmyra Church Of The Brethren in the early morning hours the temperature was in low 40's, but by the afternoon as riders were finishing it rose to the mid 70's. Thank you to our riders (Scott Blouch, Kirby Brubaker, Peggy Spellman, Josh Benton, Becky Eisenbise, Merle Reinford, Russ Collins, Jon Wentling, and well, myself) for your dedication to BHA through your hard work for this event. And thanks to all the volunteers that managed rest stops, helped with meals or assisted with coordination or prep work. A special word of thanks is due to Darrel Reinford. He created this event in 2005, and continues to provide excellent leadership as our Bike Tour Coordinator. You can still sponsor a rider: If you would like to make a sponsorship donation, go to our Online Donation Page to process your donation, and select the name of the rider you wish to sponsor from the drop down list. From Left: Jon, Kirby, Scott and Becky pause at Spring Creek Church of the Brethren in Hershey for a rest stop. They'd ridden 49 miles at this point, and continued to finish the 100 kilometer (about 62 mile) course.
Becky Eisenbise (left) and Scott Blouch return to Palmyra after 62 miles of cycling.
Jon Wentling enjoys a spot of scenery along the route. Much beautiful contryside was traversed.

Friday, April 27, 2007 Thank You Messiah College! Over the years, Messiah College has become a tremendous partner to our ministry. I'm personally excited and encouraged by their committment to the city of Harrisburg. Two of our Board members are professors at Messiah College. We've had numerous work groups and individuals from the college. Currently, a Personal Selling class team (members: Audrey Myer, Erica Lepley, Mary Boarman, Tiffany Samuel, and George Oberg) is recruiting sponsors for our golf tournament. Most recently, on April 19 the Business Department brought 25 students and professors to BHA for a spring service day. As you can see from the pictures below, these volunteers helped with cleaning and maintenance projects in our apartments as well as a mailing project. They even helped prepare food for riders in our Spring Thaw Bike Tour. Thanks Business Department!
