What Back to School Means to Lakeyshia

Back to school time means so much more to me as a mother of 3 school age boys. However, there’s an even greater reason back to school time means so much to me. If you’ve been a supporter or follower of BHA for a while, you know that I am a graduate of our Transitions program. I experienced homelessness during the 11th grade with a 1-year-old child. I did not have a stable and safe place to call home. In fact, the house I was staying in had no running water or electricity. I was accepted into BHA’s transitional housing program in the spring of 2000. Preparing for my senior year of high school was much less stressful knowing that I had a place to call home for my son. I went from having practically zero support to a support system full of people who wanted so much more for me than I could ever imagine. As a result, I was able to graduate from Harrisburg High School on time with my class. I was accepted into 3 different colleges and chose to attend Shippensburg University where my support system continued to grow. I accepted a job offer with a major insurance company prior to graduating from Ship and was able to move back to Harrisburg immediately upon graduating.

I have since married my biggest supporter, obtained my Master’s degree in Administration of Human Services from Wilmington University, and have been blessed with 2 more sons and a daughter. My then 1-year-old son is now 17 years old starting his senior year of high school in less than 2 weeks! The tremendous amount of support and accountability I received during my time at BHA helped me to see the potential I have always had even when it felt like my world was crashing down. My life has come full circle since 2000 now that I am the Director of Development for BHA. I can give back firsthand to the very organization that played a huge role in where I am today! You can do the same by investing in our women and children today. The role your support can play will be life changing for these families. Show your support today!
